Japanese patterns (wagara), which are commonly found on kimono, have intrigued and inspired artists around the world with their beauty and symbolism; so much so that traditional Japanese patterns such as sakura and The Great Wave Off Kanagawa can be found on purses, dresses shirts and more. On Saturday, November 4th at 7 pm EST (6 pm CST), JETAA Chicago will host Indiana-based fashion and textile designer Tokyo Twiggy (a.k.a. Jenn Felts) for an online discussion of the influence of Japanese culture on fashion design!

Tokyo Twiggy spent time in Japan as a student in both high school (Nagaoka, Niigata) and college (Aoyama Gakuin Univeristy in Tokyo), and has also gone for travel. Her love for and appreciation of Japanese culture is apparent in her designs, which incorporate a variety of traditional Japanese geometric, floral and animal patterns. Attend our event to learn about how Tokyo Twiggy's love of Japanese culture and experiences in Japan have served as inspiration for her fashion and textile designs!

A new twist on an old favorite! The JETAA Chicago and Japan America Society of Chicago YPC Book Club continues in 2023 with a meeting in December!

Join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, December 12th!

Our book club focuses on highlighting voices and stories with a strong connection to Japan. For our next meeting we have chosen Idol, Burning. Written by Rin Usami, December's pick is a portrait of fame, disconnection, obsession, and disillusion, Idol, Burning shines a white-hot spotlight on fandom and "stan" culture, the money-making schemes of the pop idol industry, the seductive power of social media, and the powerful emotional void that opens when an idol falls from grace.

Be sure to pick up a copy of the book and then join us for an evening of casual discussion in a virtual space via Zoom! Registrations are limited, so grab a spot while you can!
