The Inter-University Center (IUC) is an advanced Japanese language school located in Yokohama, Japan, with an administrative office housed at Stanford University. The IUC’s language and fellowship programs are intended for students who are embarking on careers in Japanese studies or a profession in which fluent Japanese is necessary. The programs are designed to bring each participant to a level of proficiency sufficient for academic or professional use.
The IUC is governed by a consortium of 16 North American universities. The IUC offers several student programs each year: the 10-month program (45-60 graduate students and recent B.A.’s, including 20 graduate students who participate in The Nippon Foundation Fellows Program), the Summer Program (35-45 undergraduate and graduate students), the Summer Intensive Kanbun Program (6-8 students), and the IUC Professional Tutorials (year-round tutorials).
The Managing Director (Academic Program Professional 3) plays a key leadership role in these programs, including strategic planning, financial analysis, development (including identifying funding and grant opportunities), external relations, and overseeing program administration. The Managing Director serves as an ex officio member of the IUC Leadership Board, and works closely with consortium members, faculty, fellows, the IUC Leadership Board, the fellowship and student programs administrator, and other staff. The Managing Director will supervise one staff member (IUC Program Manager) at Stanford and, in partnership with the Resident Director in Yokohama, oversee the local Yokohama Center and its staff.
